Israeli Martial Arts: What Are They?

Author: Shane

Of the major Israeli martial arts, krav maga and kapap are the two most noteworthy.  While krav maga still sees use among martial artists, MMA fighters, and regular citizens alike, kapap has widely fallen out of use but remains a fighting concept rather than a practical skill set.

Kapap was developed for use by Palmach fighters in the Jewish Aliyah camps in the 1930s.  However, because it was created more for soldiers, it did not prevail to see use in modern times.
Krav maga on the other hand has been adapted and developed for practical use.  It is taught in self defense courses and is used by the MMA.  It also was used in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the movie Enough with Jennifer Lopez.

While most martial arts are about the engagement of a fight, krav maga emphasizes getting out of violent situations as fast as possible.  It includes disarming techniques for knives and guns and also quick strikes and footwork.

Unlike karate or jiu jitsu, krav maga does not widely use kicks, as they are impractical for close range, potentially violent fights, and can also render you more vulnerable to being put off balance by an attacker.
Not many other Israeli martial arts exist that are well-known today, but those that do exist are often being updated and improved to adapt to new moves fighters are coming up with.

If you are interested in learning krav maga or other such techniques, it is best to find videos and picture manuals that demonstrate how you can learn krav maga online.
